Unfortunately, even when all the wedding excitement is dying down and you are settling into life as newlyweds, the wedmin is still not over. If you are planning on changing your surname, then there are certain things you will need to action to do so. The quicker you get on it the better, otherwise it’s one of those tasks you’ll never get around to doing!

Thank you to Ray Sawyer for this image.

First up, what documents do you need to change your name?

If you’re taking your partner’s name, or double-barreling, then your marriage certificate is all the proof you’ll need. Make sure you get certified copies made, as you may need to send off the original document for some applications.

If you are creating a new surname, or adding an additional name / middle name, then you will need to submit a Deed Poll. This will make your name change official and also provide you with your proof.

Once you have the documents you need;

Contact these bodies first to get your new official ID documents.

This will make changing your name elsewhere much easier :

  • DVLA, to change your driving licence. This is free.
  • Passport office, to change your passport. This will cost £82.50

Next, you may want to get in touch with some of these organisations:

  • HMRC – to update your tax details
  • Bank – to change your name on your account and get new cards issued
  • Insurance – update any polices and contact information if you have a new email
  • Utilities – it’s handy to get your bills in your new name, in case you need proof of address later
  • GP – always good practice to keep your records updated
  • Council – similar to utilities, it is good due diligence to update your name
  • Subscriptions – go through all your subscriptions and update your contact details
  • Workplace – talk to admin/HR if you would like to change your email and signature.

So, there’s your to-do list. Make sure you save this blog for later and here’s your friendly reminder to stop procrastinating and get on and do it!

Friends who got married a year ago and still haven’t changed their name, I’m looking at you…
